Which Thai network will I be on?
Thailand's main operators are AIS, True Move H and dtac (now merged with True). Travel eSIMs generally roam onto AIS or True, which have the widest reach across greater Bangkok, the BTS and MRT lines, Chiang Mai, Phuket and the main islands.
Islands and mountains
Town centres, beach strips and resort areas on Phuket, Samui, Krabi and Koh Tao have solid coverage. Expect gaps during ferry crossings, at offshore dive sites and on remote roads in the far north. Download offline maps in advance and screenshot ferry times and booking references.
Apps worth installing before you fly
- Grab: rides and food delivery. Register and add a card before you travel.
- Bolt: a useful alternative in Bangkok, often cheaper at peak times.
- Google Translate: download the Thai offline pack for camera translation.
- Google Maps: save your itinerary pins and download the Bangkok offline area.
Can I make phone calls?
Travel eSIMs are data-only and do not include a Thai number, so local calls and Thai SMS are not available. Guesthouses, private drivers and dive shops almost always communicate over LINE or WhatsApp. For the rare case where a local call is needed, hotel reception can place it for you.

Should I install the eSIM at home or after arriving in Thailand?
Install at home on Wi-Fi, since the process needs an internet connection. Installing does not start the clock — most plans begin counting days when you actually connect to a Thai network.
Does a Thailand eSIM use AIS or True?
It depends on the plan. Mainstream travel eSIMs roam onto AIS or True, both of which cover Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and the main islands well. The provider's plan page states which network is used.
